What is Traditional Chinese Medicine?

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is the culmination of thousands of years of health wisdom in China. It views the human body as an organic whole, guided by Yin-Yang and the Five Elements. Practitioners use the four diagnostic methods—observation, listening, inquiry, and pulse-taking—to identify constitution and restore balance.

Core Concepts of TCM

  • Yin-Yang Balance: Health is a dynamic balance of Yin and Yang; illness arises from their imbalance.
  • Five Elements: Wood, fire, earth, metal and water correspond to the five organs. Harmonizing them harmonizes the body.
  • Meridian Theory: The body's pathways for qi and blood. Acupuncture, massage and cupping all work along meridians.
  • Preventive Care: TCM focuses on prevention through diet, movement and emotional regulation.

Three Classic Experiences

1. Pulse Diagnosis

The practitioner places three fingers on the wrist to feel the pulse's depth, speed and strength, assessing the state of internal organs and qi-blood.

2. Acupuncture

Extremely fine needles stimulate specific points to unblock meridians and regulate qi and blood. The WHO recognizes acupuncture's effectiveness for many conditions.

3. Moxibustion & Cupping

Moxibustion warms meridians with burning mugwort; cupping uses suction to dispel cold and dampness, leaving the body relaxed.

Herbs and Sachets

Chinese herbs are not only medicine but also lifestyle. Make your own herbal sachet for mosquito repellent, calming or refreshment, and take Oriental fragrance home.
